Volubilis Archaeological Site in Morocco

About this place
Volubilis stretches across forty hectares of cultivated hills, about thirty kilometres north of Meknès. Capital of Mauretania Tingitana for nearly two centuries, it retains a triumphal arch, a capitol, thermal baths and above all dozens of polychrome mosaics of stunning refinement. You walk amongst Corinthian columns, you make out the layout of shopping streets, you stop before patrician houses where the floors still tell of Orpheus, Bacchus or the labours of Hercules. The silence, disturbed only by the wind and the storks nesting on the capitals, makes the stroll contemplative.
The visit can be done independently or with an official guide who sheds light on the urban planning and daily life of antiquity. You should allow two to three hours for the complete circuit, longer if you linger before each vestige. Bring water, a hat and comfortable shoes: the site is vast and offers little shade. Volubilis suits curious families, history enthusiasts and all those who enjoy feeling the weight of centuries in a magnificent landscape.
