Kasbah Taourirt

The Kasbah Taourirt stands at the entrance to Ouarzazate like a red earth castle, bristling with crenellated towers and geometric patterns carved into the pisé. Former residence of pasha el-Glaoui who ruled over the region at the beginning of the 20th century, it unfolds a labyrinth of rooms adorned with painted ceilings, finely carved moucharabiehs and walkways that crisscross in the half-light. One feels the past grandeur of a feudal power, between decorative splendour and defensive austerity.

The visit reveals the ingenuity of Berber architecture: light wells, natural ventilation system, state rooms contrasting with the domestic quarters. Some restored parts can be visited freely, others with a guide who recounts the turbulent history of the Glaoua. Accessible to all, the kasbah also offers from its terraces a panoramic view over the palm grove and the surrounding mountains. An essential stop to understand Ouarzazate before heading towards the valleys of the South.
