Kasbah Museum

Places to visit · Tanger

About this place

Housed in the Dar el-Makhzen, a sultans' palace built in the 17th century, the Kasbah Museum occupies a sumptuous residence in the heart of the fortified medina. Its rooms adorned with zelliges, cedar woodwork and painted ceilings house archaeological collections tracing Tangier's past, from the Neolithic to the Islamic era. The inner courtyard with marble columns, the Andalusian garden and the terraces offering a spectacular view over the strait add to the charm of the place.

One discovers Roman mosaics, Punic ceramics, Berber jewellery and Moroccan art objects that bear witness to the civilisations that have marked this crossroads city. The ethnographic rooms present traditional costumes and Rif crafts. Ideal for those wishing to understand Tangier's Mediterranean and African roots, this museum combines architectural heritage and cultural richness. An essential stop for grasping the plural soul of the white city.

This museum is divided into 2 parts: a temporary exhibition and a historical part. Concerning the temporary exhibition, it is currently on "the lights of Africa", representation of light (electric, spiritual, solar, source of hope...) according to each country of Africa... It is magnificent!

The place isn't huge, but that's exactly what makes the visit pleasant and accessible. The Andalusian patio and the architecture are almost as worth the detour as the collections themselves. I appreciated the calm and authentic atmosphere of the place. It's a place full of charm, set in an old 17th century palace.

L’endroit n’est pas immense, mais justement cela rend la visite agréable et accessible. Le patio andalou et l’architecture valent presque autant le détour que les collections elles-même. J'ai apprécié l’atmosphère calme et authentique du lieu.

Installed in the former sultan's palace, this museum is a marvel both historical and museographic. You move around in precious calm, far from the bustle of neighbouring alleys, through subtly restored rooms that reveal the multiple faces of the Mediterranean: crafts, traditions, commercial exchanges, everyday objects…

A museum to see to know the history of the town. The kasbah is nice, shame that the person at reception didn't have a smile when we went through
