The Caves of Hercules – Tangier

Places to visit · Tanger

About this place

Prices: – 3€ for Moroccans – 6€ for Foreigners – Free entry on Fridays. 14 km west of Tangier, you'll find the Caves of Hercules. Amazing and magnificent, this archaeological site is above all filled with mystery.

Hire a car in Tangier to go and discover this extraordinary place. Located not far from Tangier city centre, the Caves of Hercules are certainly among the most beautiful and most enigmatic places in Morocco. From inside, and through their entrances facing the Atlantic, you can see the sunset and the Cape of the Strait of Gibraltar.

This opening facing the sea has been photographed thousands of times, for the beauty of the view of course, but also because it has the shape of Africa. The view from the Caves of Hercules is very popular, but that's not what made this place so famous. Indeed, if the Caves of Hercules are a major tourist attraction in Morocco, it's because the site contains traces of prehistoric occupation as well as an archaeological mystery.

No one yet knows who could have built these caves, which are partly artificial. Local beliefs suggest that it was an ancient civilisation (from the Neolithic period, according to some). And that's not the only legend surrounding the Caves of Hercules.

If they bear this name, it's because this would be the place where the mythological figure came to rest after his 12 labours. The mysteries and legends surrounding the Caves of Hercules are numerous and based on few elements. But one thing is certain: the site is magnificent and worth the visit.

At the gates of Tanger, the Grottes d'Hercule seem to breathe the soul of time. The sea sculpts the rock there like a poem, and the opening shaped like Africa invites an inner journey.

Aux portes de Tanger, les Grottes d’Hercule semblent respirer l’âme du temps. La mer y sculpte la roche comme un poème, et l’ouverture en forme d’Afrique invite au voyage intérieur.

As long as I was there I also paid 80 DH to enter the cave. It was worth the trouble to see but if I had come with family, I'm not certain I would have paid for everyone. The view on the exterior site is magnificent 😍 I'm all the same very happy to have this visit on my list ☺️
