Essaouira Beach

Places to visit · Essaouira

About this place

Essaouira Beach stretches for several kilometres south of the medina, offering a permanent spectacle of Atlantic waves and multicoloured kites. The constant wind that has made the town's reputation turns it into a popular playground for water sports enthusiasts, whilst the tidal range alternately reveals expanses ideal for long walks. From the first light of day, fishermen head to their blue boats, and come evening, horsemen gallop past in the golden light.

People come here to feel the sea air whip their faces, watch beginners in kitesurfing supervised by local schools, or simply sit facing the horizon. Children love running on the firm sand at low tide, whilst photographers watch for the changing hues of the sky. Directly accessible from the medina, this beach suits sporty types and contemplatives seeking sea air alike.
