Sqala of Essaouira Port

About this place
The Sqala of the Port forms one of Essaouira's most spectacular defensive bastions, built in the 18th century to protect the port entrance. This fortified platform displays an impressive row of bronze cannons pointed towards the Atlantic, vestiges of the military architecture designed by French engineer Théodore Cornut. The ochre stone ramparts, battered by sea spray, offer a striking view of the fishing port, the Purpuraires islands and the ocean crashing against the walls.
The walk along the ramparts allows you to observe the traditional shipyards, the blue boats returning to port and the daily port activity. It's a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts, maritime history buffs and lovers of cinematic atmospheres: Orson Welles filmed scenes of Othello here. People come at sunrise or sunset, when the golden light enhances the ancient stones and the sea wind still carries echoes of the past.

Magnifique!
