Fondouk Nejjarine

Places to visit · Fès

About this place

Fondouk Nejjarine stands as one of the most beautiful caravanserais in Fès, with its inner courtyard adorned with zelliges and carved wooden balconies. Built to accommodate merchants and their goods, this building in the carpenters' quarter (nejjarine) bears witness to the artisanal expertise of Fès. Carefully restored, it now houses the Museum of Wood Arts and Crafts, where one discovers ancient tools, carved doors and traditional furniture.

One wanders between the floors to admire the Moorish architecture, observes the collections that tell the story of the wood craftsmen, and climbs to the terrace to take in the rooftops of the medina. The fountain on the façade, finely chiselled, marks the entrance to this cultural stopping place. The site appeals to architecture enthusiasts, those curious about craftsmanship and all who seek to understand the soul of Fès beyond the bustle of the souks.
