Médersa Attarine

Places to visit · Fès

About this place

Built in the 14th century under the reign of the Merinids, the Médersa Attarine bears witness to the architectural refinement of Fes. Its central courtyard, surrounded by galleries adorned with chiselled stucco and geometric mosaics, offers a concentrate of Moroccan decorative art. The cells of theology students are organised around this luminous space, whilst the prayer room reveals a mihrab of rare delicacy. Every detail, from the painted wooden ceiling to the marble columns, tells of the desire to elevate the spirit through beauty.

The visit allows you to go upstairs to admire the view over the rooftops of the medina and understand the organisation of a traditional Quranic school. Located on Talaa Kebira near the perfume souk that gives it its name, it can be discovered after a few steps from the Quaraouiyine mosque. Ideal for lovers of architecture and history, it can be visited in around thirty minutes, in the calm conducive to wonder.
