About this place

The Grand Socco, officially Place du 9 Avril 1947, marks the natural boundary between the old medina and the modern quarters of Tangier. This lively esplanade, lined with palm trees and jacarandas, thrums to the rhythm of flower sellers, street vendors and Tangier residents who cross paths here at all hours. Colourful facades frame this urban theatre where languages and generations mingle, under the benevolent gaze of the Sidi Bou Abib mosque.

It's the ideal starting point for plunging into the medina via rue es-Siaghin, strolling towards the Mendoubia gardens or taking tea whilst watching the square's ceaseless ballet. Photographers appreciate the changing light that caresses the ochre walls, whilst curious travellers find here the very essence of Tangier: that blend of popular authenticity and cosmopolitan nostalgia that forms the soul of the city of the Strait.
