Chellah Archaeological Site

Places to visit · Rabat

About this place

Chellah is a unique archaeological site that layers the strata of Moroccan history. Behind its ochre Almohad walls, the remains of the Roman city of Sala Colonia sit alongside a 14th-century Merinid necropolis. Storks perched on minarets, wild fig trees, birdsong and the trickling of pools create a timeless atmosphere, just a stone's throw from the centre of Rabat.

Visitors wander among Roman columns, mosaics, a sanctuary with sacred eels and royal tombs adorned with zellige tilework. The site can be visited in one to two hours, ideally in late afternoon when the light gilds the stones. Perfect for history and photography enthusiasts, Chellah also appeals to families with its lush garden. A contemplative place that reveals the cultural depth of the capital.
