Koutoubia Marrakech

About this place
The Koutoubia raises its 77-metre minaret above Jemaa el-Fna square, an architectural reference that inspired the Giralda in Seville and the Hassan Tower in Rabat. Built in the 12th century, this Almohad mosque takes its name from the booksellers who kept shop at its feet. Its perfect proportions, its ochre stone that turns pink at sunset and its four copper globes at the summit compose the most recognisable silhouette in Morocco.
The minaret cannot be visited, reserved for the call to prayer, but its peaceful gardens offer a welcome break between two souks. You can walk around it to admire the details of its facades adorned with polylobed arches and geometric patterns. Photographers and strollers come to capture the evening light, when the building blazes. A must for anyone wanting to understand Marrakech, accessible to all visitors respectful of the place of worship.
