The Saadian Tombs

Places to visit · Marrakech

About this place

Discovered in 1917 after centuries of oblivion, the Saadian Tombs constitute one of the rare testimonies to the splendour of this dynasty that ruled over Morocco. Nestled near the Kasbah Mosque, these mausoleums contain the burial sites of some sixty members of the Saadian family, including Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour. The carved stucco work, the Carrara marble columns, the cedar wood ceilings and the colourful zellige tilework vie with one another in refinement in the Hall of the Twelve Columns, the site's absolute masterpiece.

The visit takes place in a peaceful garden where the more modest tombs of soldiers and servants are lined up. The place appeals to all lovers of Hispano-Moorish architecture and Moroccan history. It is best to come early in the morning to avoid the crowds and fully enjoy the tranquillity of the place. An essential stop for anyone wishing to understand the art and splendour of Morocco's golden age.
