El Badiî Palace

Places to visit · Marrakech

About this place

El Badiî Palace, built by Sultan Ahmed al-Mansour after his victory over the Portuguese, now extends in vast open-air courtyards bordered by monumental ochre walls. Its impressive proportions and rectangular pools hint at the vanished splendour of this architectural gem, once adorned with marble, gold and precious stones. The atmosphere is striking: silence hangs over these immense spaces where storks and jackdaws nest, creating a poignant contrast with the bustle of the nearby medina.

Visitors wander freely through the courtyards, climb onto the ramparts to take in the full extent of the site and the rooftops of Marrakech, and discover the old underground stables that remain cool even in summer. The minbar of the Koutoubia, a 12th-century marquetry masterpiece, is on display there. Ideal for history and photography enthusiasts, the palace offers a contemplative escape out of time.
